All new televisions sold in the U.S. have caption decoders
built in, so push that button and see what it's like.
The captioning on videotaped shows
will be just what you expect, but live captioning, captioning that is
performed as the words are spoken, such as live news broadcasts, is a
bit diffent. It's impossible to be perfect when someone is speaking at
180 to 280 words per minute, so you may see some errors you just don't
understand. You may see what appeared to be misspelled words or strange
collections of characters and wondered what was going on?
Well, for an explanation of these
things, take a moment and look at Hearing With Your
Eyes!
To provide closed/open captioning,
we use special software and hardware that, when combined with our talented
writers, allows us to place the text from our realtime translation output
into the Vertical Blanking Interval of television broadcasts and/or videotape.
Again, this can be done on site or remotely. Remember, captions are an
aid to the hearing community as well as the deaf and HOH community. It
allows your words to be easily translated into foreign languages and it
also helps those that are learning English as a second language. Through
the use of captions in cartoons, children have greatly improved their
reading skills, and this is true for adults as well.
There is a very large deaf and hard
of hearing community, and they are also consumers. In fact very loyal
consumers if your business proves itself to be Deaf Freindly, which it
can easily be with a little education of your staff and the use of closed
captioning and TTY telephones. These telephones have a keyboard and a
text display so you can communicate with your prospective deaf and hard
of hearing clients. If you have a product or service that you wish to
market you should not overlook this group, and for a small additional
expense your message will reach a much larger market. Closed captioning
your television broadcast, commercial or product announcement, gets your
message out!
And
when the show is over?!
And don't forget, you are also provided with a textual
archive which can be used for disseminating your information via hardcopy,
the Internet usenet news groups, your web site, e-mail, etc., as well
as providing future reference for yourself or your company. Although
we consider all project material to be proprietary to our clients, RealTime
Reporters does archive all projects! Can't find your copy? Give us a
call and within minutes we can supply the information you seek.

And you don't have to be in
Washington to benefit from Gerry Grimm's DeafWeb

and hard of hearing.
